Experimental warming and browning influence autumnal pelagic and benthic invertebrate biomass and community structure

Globally, lakes are warming and browning with ongoing climate change. These changes significantly impact a lake's biogeochemical properties all organisms, including invertebrate consumers. The effects of these essential to understand, especially during critical periods after before the growing season, that is, autumn spring, which can determine composition consumer community. In this study, we used large-scale experimental pond system test combined effect (+3°C) increased input terrestrial coloured dissolved organic carbon (gradient 1.6–8.8 mg/L in ambient 1.6–9.3 warm)—which causes browning—on zooplankton benthic macroinvertebrate biomass following spring. Total decreased browning, while total zoobenthos did not respond either treatment. Warming throughout had no overall interactive on or zoobenthos. Autumnal pelagic biomass, caused by decrease both Rotifera Copepoda. contrast, there was only Asellus sp. showing negative response warming. An autumnal increase led related increases Daphnia but affect biomass. While expected follow responses primary bacterial production treatments, find any relationship between groups estimates resource production. Our results suggest may lead less overarching general mostly taxon-specific. This study gives novel insights into spring understanding change community different habitats.
